Two good, three heavy, and two bumper spruce seed crops were produced during a 15-year period. There was considerable variability in seed crops, however. Not all locations produced good to bumper seed crops when overall yearly ratings averaged good or better; conversely, some locations produced bumper seed crops in 3 or more years.

Miller Creek Demonstration Forest - a forest born of fire: a field guide

Miller Creek, on the Flathead National Forest in northwest Montana, is a demonstration forest, showing up to 30 years of forest change after clearcutting and a wide range of fire treatments in 1967 and 1968. Differences in tree regeneration and vegetation development are explained for units that were clearcut and prescribed burned, clearcut and burned by wildfire, clearcut and unburned, and uncut and burned by wildfire.

Prescribed burning created a more favorable seedbed by exposing mineral soil and increasing soil moisture, resulting in a twenty-fold increase in the number of seeds germinating on burned compared to unburned sites.
