This international symposium on theory and techniques for assessing the accuracy of spatial data and spatial analyses included more than ninety presentations by representatives from government, academic, and private institutions in over twenty countries throughout the world.

Biomass flow in western forests: Simulating the effects of fuel reduction and presettlement restoration treatments

Fuel treatment silviculture and the resulting long-term flow of biomass were examined using data from selected western stands. An uneven-aged management regime with reserve trees was modeled, using a canopy closure of 40 percent for the dominant trees as a target and a harvest cutting cycle of 20 years. Fuel reduction treatments in currently overstocked stands resulted in an initial peak of removal for the first and second cutting cycles.

The purpose of this conference was to increase awareness through exploration and evaluation of global, national, and regional perspectives about the potential contributions that watershed management can make to the conservation, sustainable development, and use of natural resources in ecosystem-based land stewardship in the 21st century. The conference consisted of 2 and a half days of synthesis papers.

Capturing subregional variability in regional-scale climate change vulnerability assessments of natural resources

Natural resource vulnerability to climate change can depend on the climatology and ecological conditions at a particular site. Here we present a conceptual framework for incorporating spatial variability in natural resource vulnerability to climate change in a regional-scale assessment. The framework was implemented in the first regional-scale vulnerability assessment conducted by the US Forest Service.

In a continuing international forum, participants exchanged information on existing or potential cooperative projects, agency functions and programs, and issues were concerning natural and cultural resource management in the border states.

Coastal management at Ojo de Liebre, Baja California Sur

We analyzed the biotic, abiotic, and human components interacting at the coastal zone of the Ojo de Liebre Lagoon, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Using geographic information systems, satellite images, and the main biological, physical, and socioeconomic components, we developed an environmental characterization of the zone.

Attributes of successful stock water ponds in southern Arizona

The attributes of 20 ponds (or stock tanks) on the Nogales Ranger District of the Coronado National Forest were studied in detail by groups. Two contrasting groups, judged to be either functional (n = 11) or nonfunctional (n = 9) were used in the study. Differences between the groups were evaluated on the basis of attributes of the ponds themselves, the contributing watersheds, and the local climate and modeled hydrology.
