Rocky Mountain Research Station: 2010 Research Accomplishments

The Rocky Mountain Research Station is one of seven regional units that make up the USDA Forest Service Research and Development organization the most extensive natural resources research organization in the world. We maintain 12 field laboratories throughout a 12-state territory encompassing the Great Basin, Southwest, Rocky Mountains, and parts of the Great Plains.

A primary goal in the management of forests and grasslands is to maintain community structure and disturbance processes within their historical range of variation. If, within a managed ecosystem, either is found to lie outside that range, restoration may be necessary.

Establishment record for the Wellner Cliffs Research Natural Area

This publication is the establishment report for Wellner Cliffs Research Natural Area (RNA), located on the Priest River Experimental Forest, Idaho Panhandle National Forests. The RNA features vegetation on dry cliffs that are embedded in mid-elevation moist western hemlock/western redcedar/grand fir forests.
