Sage advice for managers: A new, collaborative science framework for conservation and restoration of the sagebrush biome

The two-part Science Framework for Conservation and Restoration of the Sagebrush Biome published by the U.S. Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station is a new, multi-scale approach to management of sagebrush ecosystems. The product of an extensive collaboration between State and Federal agencies and universities, it employs science on ecological resilience to disturbance and resistance to invasive species (like cheatgrass), along with Greater sage-grouse habitat requirements, to improve conservation planning and help prioritize management actions.

GSD update: A review of recent research by the Grassland, Shrubland and Desert Ecosystems Science Program

Significant results of recent research and science delivery by GSD scientists are highlighted related to 1) ecosystem resiliency, and native and invasive species management, and 2) the role of climate in species adaptation, restoration and management.

The economics of fuel management: Wildfire, invasive plants, and the dynamics of sagebrush rangelands in the western United States

In this article we develop a simulation model to evaluate the economic efficiency of fuel treatments and apply it to two sagebrush ecosystems in the Great Basin of the western United States: the Wyoming Sagebrush Steppe and Mountain Big Sagebrush ecosystems. These ecosystems face the two most prominent concerns in sagebrush ecosystems relative to wildfire: annual grass invasion and native conifer expansion.
