Western bluebird (Sialia mexicana) population data were collected in northern Arizona, USA, following two wildfires (Hochderferr Fire, Horseshoe Fire) that occurred in May and June 1996. This is a data subset consisting of 8 years of bird data collection post-wildfire (1999-2006) and 3 years of vegetation data (2002, 2005, 2006), and is part of a larger long-term data set.

We studied 282 nesting attempts on 107 territories of Northern Goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) on the Kaibab Plateau in northern Arizona from 1991–1996. Mark-recapture methods were used to estimate recruitment, turnover of adults on territories, fi delity to territories by adults, and apparent annual survival of breeding adults. Territories were regularly spaced at a mean nearest-neighbor distance of 3.9 km.

We used the Cormack-Jolly-Seber model to estimate the effects of radiotransmitters on survival of breeding northern goshawks (Accipiter gentilis). We separately compared apparent annual survival of leg-banded goshawks with (1) tailmount- and (2) backpack-style radiotransmitters (hereafter tailmounts and backpacks) to apparent annual survival of breeding adults with legbands only.

Model development combining multiple data sources to leverage data source strengths and for improved parameter precision has increased, but with limited discussion on precision gain versus effort. Some data sources take more effort than others, thus knowing how much improvement is gained with these monitoring metrics is important for allocating samples on the landscape. Our framework allows research and monitoring programs to evaluate optimal use of limited funds when multiple data sources are available within the study design phase to meet study objectives.

Northern Goshawks: A 20 year study of ecology and habitat on the Kaibab Plateau

Research on the Kaibab has shown that goshawks, predators of birds and small mammals, are strongly food-limited. The local suite of prey depends on the amount, quality, and intermixture of the particular habitats needed by each prey. These include a fine-scale mix of small groups of mature trees with interlocking crowns for tree squirrels, woodpeckers, grouse, and other birds, and scattered, small grass-forb openings for rabbits, ground squirrels, grouse, and other prey. Interestingly, this habitat mix characterized the natural conditions of the ponderosa pine and mixed conifer forests on the Kaibab Plateau before initiation of fire suppression and organized tree harvests.

Ecology of Mexican spotted owls in the Sacramento Mountains, New Mexico

RMRS scientists recently completed a 10 year study of a population of threatened Mexican spotted owls (Strix occidentalis lucida) in the Sacramento Mountains, New Mexico. This study evaluated demography, habitat use, and diet composition of spotted owls, as well as forest structure characteristic of owl habitat. We determined that most owl nests are located in wet mixed-conifer forests not greatly in need of ecological restoration.

Data product containing tree heights, survival, and genetic variation for "Genetic Variation in Ponderosa Pine: A 15-year Test of Provenances in the Great Plains"

Seeds from 79 natural stands throughout the ponderosa pine range, both east and west of the Continental Divide, were sown and grown in a nursery for three to four years in the 1960's. These seeds were then distributed to plantations, mostly in the Great Plains. This dataset contains the height of the surviving trees after 15 years for 14 plantations.
