Current Research

I recently completed a landscape-level forest biomass and carbon sequestration assessment using repeat field and lidar surveys. Now I am expanding the scope of this work to examine relationships between forest canopy structure, wildlife habitat and biodiversity, and coupled carbon and water cycles. My collaborators and I are working to improve LiDAR data analysis capabilities for vegetation applications. I also work with other fire scientists to relate postfire effects to prefire fuels and active fire behavior on prescribed fires, where it's safe and logistically feasible to measure these variables before, during, and after the fire. An improved fundamental understanding of fire as a process will advance fire science and help fire managers make better decisions. I also study the effectiveness of fuel treatments for mitigating wildfire severity.

Research Interests

My research interests include landscape, vegetation, and fire ecology; remote sensing of vegetation patterns and processes; forest and rangeland ecology and management; empirical modeling of spatially explicit ecological data.

Past Research

My PhD research examined the ecological causes and consequences of historic bush encroachment in South African savannas. I retain an active interest in savanna fire ecology and the relationship between vegetation pattern and fire process in both forest and rangeland ecosystems.

Why This Research is Important

Forest managers need better tools and information on forest biomass and carbon sequestration. Fuel and fire managers need better information on how best to manipulate forest fuels to mitigate the risk of severe fire and to cope with severe fire effects. Airborne and satellite remote sensing in combination with appropriately sampled ground data can provide this needed information in the form of maps.

    How much fuel is consumed in a wildfire?

    Wildfires burn a tremendous amount of fuel to release a proportionate amount of heat and smoke - but how much? The amount of fuel (load) and how efficiently it burns (consumption) are the two largest sources of uncertainty in estimating smoke emissions from fires. This research is using pre-fire and post-fire LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) collections to more precisely map pre-fire and post-fire fuel loads; by differencing these maps, we can more accurately estimate fuel consumption due to the wildfire.

    New method helps monitor forest insect outbreaks

    Forest insects kill and defoliate trees across millions of acres each year. RMRS scientists have developed a new method to map insect-caused mortality with satellite imagery, which is supporting 2020 monitoring efforts.

    Where’s the biomass? A new approach for quantifying biomass and carbon in the Western United States

    The 2012 Forest Service Planning rule requires that National Forests incorporate into their forest management plans mitigation and adaptation strategies in response to climate change. The Carbon Monitoring System provides annual biomass maps spanning 2000-2016 that will be useful for developing carbon budgets for National Forests and identifying areas needing fuel treatments to reduce wildfire risk. The underlying foundation of this work is forest inventory and LiDAR data contributed by USFS managers and many other public and private stakeholders.

    Complementing insect aerial surveys with satellite imagery

    Forest insects kill large numbers of trees in the western United States each year. The US Forest Service monitors and quantifies tree mortality from insect outbreaks using annual aerial detection surveys. The Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS) is demonstrating how satellite imagery can be used to produce annual maps of tree mortality, as the Forest Service anticipates relying more on satellite imagery, a cheaper alternative to aerial detection surveys, to monitor forest health in the future.

    Using “good” fires to reduce “bad” fire effects and smoke impacts

    The broad consensus among fire and fuel scientists and managers is that we need to reduce hazardous fuel accumulations on many more acres to mitigate the risk and severity of wildfires. But mechanical fuel treatments are expensive! Prescribed fire is a more cost effective tool to reduce fuel loads and to restore and maintain fuel conditions to something closer to the historical norm.

    Background Root diseases are a primary cause of reduced timber volume, decreased carbon sequestration, and impaired ecosystem function. In the inland northwestern USA, root diseases have accounted for more losses in timber volume than forest fires or other disturbances. Management options to combat losses from root diseases have been limited. Armillaria altimontana and A. solidipes are soil fungi that frequently co-occur in the northwestern USA.  Armillaria solidipes has been well-documented as a virulent primary pathogen that is among most damaging causes of mortality and growth loss in coniferous forests.  In contrast, little is known about the influence of A. altimontana on tree health and growth.

    Prescribed fires: Mapping fuels and energy release across the landscape

    Build-up of woody and herbaceous fuels increases the risk of hazardous wildfires. Using airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) scientists are examining fuel build up between wildfires to examine the relationship between surface fuels and fire energy. By integrating the repeated measures of heat flux imaged over the whole duration of a fire, the total energy released was mapped across an entire burn area. Airborne remote sensing provides multiple measures to help advance fire science.

    Forest, fuel, and fire management strategies and decisions applied at the scale of forest stands influence not just the tree overstory but also understory plant composition and structure. Understory plants and forest floor materials constitute the surface fuels burned in prescribed fires. Researchers associated LiDAR data from Eglin Air Force Base in Florida with field plot data and fire management records.

    The costs of fighting wildfires have dramatically increased in the past decade, as have the size and severity of wildfires. Rocky Mountain Research Station scientists and collaborators at the University of Idaho undertook a literature review and case study analysis to answer the question: Can fuel treatments mitigate wildfire effects?

    Laser technology and modeling tools for precision forest inventory, monitoring, and planning

    Airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology uses lasers mounted on aircraft to image the 3-D structure of trees and other objects on the ground. RMRS Research Forester Andrew Hudak and others are developing relationships between LiDAR estimates and traditional forestry measures collected on the ground to develop maps of forest biomass and predict changes over time. Managers can benefit from this precise, spatially explicit information for forest planning as climate changes into the future.

    Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment (FASMEE): Fishlake National Forest prescribed burn

    The Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment (FASMEE) is a large-scale interagency effort to identify how fuels, fire behavior, fire energy and meteorology interact to determine the dynamics of smoke plumes, the long-range transport of smoke and local fire effects such as soil heating and vegetative response. FASMEE is designed to collect observations from large prescribed fires by combining Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), radar, ground monitoring, aircraft and satellite imagery, and weather and atmospheric measurements. Knowing more about how wildland fire operates helps land managers better predict fire behavior, smoke impacts, and the short- to long-term effects of fire. It also promotes increased public and firefighter safety and aids in the allocation of firefighting resources.
    • Field site selection was based on a stratified random sampling design using one-year post-fire dNBR burn severity data retrieved from the national Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) project, elevation, and transformed aspect (Fig. 2).

    Vegetation recovery in western USA and Alaska coniferous forest ecosystems a decade after major wildfires

    Many large fires have occurred in recent decades across the western United States and projections predict this trend to continue with increasingly warmer and drier conditions, meaning extensive areas have and will burn severely. Accurate estimates of fuel conditions and vegetation recovery rates of various ecosystems with time since last burn would assist fuel and fire management decisions. Understanding vegetation response trajectories based upon burn severity and other post-burn indicators will increase our ability to effectively prioritize management options and planning to address long-term fuel and fire management objectives.

    Mapping aboveground biomass annually across the northwestern USA from LiDAR and Landsat image time series

    The cumulative area of LiDAR collections across multiple ownerships in the northwestern USA has reached the point that land managers of the USDA Forest Service (USFS) and other stakeholders would greatly benefit from a strategy for how to utilize LiDAR for regional aboveground biomass inventory. The need for Carbon Monitoring Systems (CMS) can be more robustly addressed by using not only available NASA satellite data products, but also commercial airborne LiDAR data collections.

    Patterns and processes: Monitoring and understanding plant diversity in frequently burned longleaf pine landscapes

    Longleaf pine ecosystems are remarkably rich in plant species and represent the dominant upland forest type in several southeastern military bases. We are coupling a series of field experiments with data mining exercises to help managers monitor the impact of various activities on the understory plant community.

    The Prescribed Fire Combustion and Atmospheric Dynamics Research Experiment (RxCADRE) is a collaborative effort in longleaf pine ecosystems to collect and integrate quality-assured fuel, fire, and atmospheric data for development and evaluation of fuel, fire behavior, smoke, and fire effects models.
