Lessons Learned

The water provided a large heat sink. It could absorb a lot of heat without becoming hot itself. The firefighters were able to breathe easier next to the cold water.
Despite the intense heat around them, the firefighters who took refuge in the river became very cold after about 15 minutes in the water. They recovered quickly after they left the river.

The deployment sites were close to the river.
