Thistle, Harold W.; Whitman, C. David. 2000. Miniature Data Loggers Record Temperature Inexpensively and Reliably. 0034 2305. Missoula, MT: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, National Technology and Development Program. 6 p.
The HOBO H8 Pro Temperature/Temp External data logger manufactured by Onset Computer of Bourne, MA, was tested and found to be an extremely practical tool for recording accurate temperatures at regular intervals for long periods. The data logger is 4 inches in diameter and about 2 inches high. It costs about $169. An optional radiation shield for the external temperature sensor costs $65. The internal lithium battery lasts for up to 3 years. Onboard data storage holds up to 21,763 instantaneous high-resolution temperature measurements. Small, relatively inexpensive data loggers allow temperature measurements to be taken at many points, providing better coverage in areas where temperature may vary over short distances, such as in tree canopies.
