Describes the results of tests to determine the optimal ground pattern coverage of gum-thickened retardant dropped from the Neptune P2V-7 airtanker. Graphs with contour lines at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 gallons per 100 square feet show the drop pattern characteristics for the Neptune P2V-7 airtanker at restricted and unrestricted flow settings and flying at drop heights of 171 to 196 feet and airspeed of 122 knots. A table shows the coverage of fire-retarding material needed for specific fuel types and fire behavior. Tables demonstrate the restricted gum-thickened retardant test drops producing the longest line of the desired coverage level based on varying the time interval between releases of the two compartments.
