Describes the results of tests to determine the optimal ground pattern coverage of gum-thickened retardant dropped from the Aero Flite DC-4 airtanker with modified ARDCO conventional tank. Graphs with contour lines at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 gallons per 100 square feet show the drop pattern characteristics for the Aero Flite DC-4 airtanker with modified ARDCO conventional tank flying at drop heights of 172 to 488 feet and airspeeds of 121 to 139 knots. A table shows the coverage of fire-retarding material needed for specific fuel types and fire behavior. Matched tables and graphs demonstrate unrestricted and restricted retardant test drops producing the maximum line length of the desired coverage level based on varying the time interval during a 2 by 4 trail drop.
