Improved Whitebark Pine Seed Scarifier

By Andy Trent, Tyler Kuhn, and Karen Burr

Nurseries scarify (nick or sand) whitebark pine seed to improve the probability of germination. Nicking seed by hand is tedious and can be dangerous. The Missoula Technology and Development Center developed a scarifier to mechanically nick seed, but very large, round seed posed a problem. A newly designed scarifier lightly sands all shapes and sizes of seed. This scarifier is more reliable and doesn't have to be tended while it is operating. The tech tip, Improved Whitebark Pine Seed Scarifier (0524–2331–MTDC), provides information on the new scarifier.
