Large New Generation Fire Shelter Now Available

By Tony Petrilli

A large size of the New Generation fire shelter has been developed that can improve firefighters' chances of survival if they become entrapped by fire. The large shelter is recommended for any firefighter who is taller than 6 feet 1 inch or whose girth is larger than 53 inches. The large shelter fits in the same hard plastic liner and case used to carry the regular fire shelter.

DEET Mosquito Repellant Reduces the Flame Resistance of Firefighters' Nomex Clothing

By Leslie Anderson and Tony Petrilli

DEET mosquito repellant reduces the flame resistance of NOMEX clothing worn by wildland firefighters. MTDC recommends that firefighters avoid applying DEET mosquito repellant to their Nomex firefighting clothing. Firefighters can apply DEET mosquito repellant to their skin, following manufacturer's recommendations. Firefighters can apply permethrin, an insecticide, to their Nomex clothing without destroying the clothing's flame resistance.
