Evaluation of Instruments Used To Measure Fuel Moisture
By Mary Ann Davies
By measuring the moisture content in dead woody fuel on the forest floor, Forest Service land managers can determine when conditions are suitable for prescribed burns. Fuel moisture sticks are used as a substitute for natural fuels when calculating the moisture content of dead fuels. Because a variety of instruments are used to measure fuel moisture, having the most efficient scale or meter is important. This tech tip describes seven scales and meters that were evaluated by MTDC.
