Personal Safety of Federal Land-Management Field Employees Working Along the Mexican Border

Federal land management employees who work and live along the Mexican border, as well as wildland firefighters and employees on temporary details, are faced with unique personal safety problems. These problems include surprise encounters with illegal immigrants, drug smugglers and people smugglers, and exposure to hazardous wastes. This report discusses findings from thirty-eight employee interviews. Two DVDs are proposed for development by the Forest Service's Technology and Development Program. The first DVD would emphasize awareness and the second DVD would give employees tools to increase their personal safety and reduce the risk of health hazards.
