A Helmet for ATV Operators with Fireline Duties

What do ATV operators and pit crew members have in common? When the situation gets hot, a cool head is needed.

This tech tip describes how ATV operators working in fire environments tested helmets that are normally used by pit crews in the race car world. These helmets have flame-resistant Nomex liners and meet U.S. Department of Transportation requirements. The ATV operators liked the helmets, but ATV noise hindered radio communications. MTDC is adapting the Bendix King radio for voice-activated communication. A prototype should be ready for field testing in these helmets during 2007.
