Forest Service employees working at remote locations need to have personal communication capabilities at all times in case of an emergency.

When employees are outside the range of cell phones and radio repeaters, communications can be provided by satellite systems. MTDC tested various satellite communication options at remote, mountainous Forest Service work sites in California, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. This tech tip describes the advantages and disadvantages of simplex (one-way, such as a pager) and duplex (two–way, such as a telephone) satellite communication devices.
