Defensive Horse Safety

You don't have to be a horse whisperer to be safe around horses. But to be safe, you do need to know how to communicate with horses. This training course provides the basics on how to safely work around pack and saddlestock. Information is presented using Adobe's Flash software to combine video footage and text. The course has nine topics, including grooming, saddling, riding, and transporting stock. The course will help Forest Service employees who are new to pack or saddlestock, as well as more experienced stock users.

Simply reviewing the course material alone is not enough to qualify or certify employees as competent to groom, break, train, or ride pack or saddlestock. Novice stock users also must receive hands-on instruction from an experienced instructor. A CD (available from MTDC) includes a Flash Media presentation, an Adobe Acrobat (PDF) version of the presentation for printing, and an HTML version of the presentation for viewing and accessibility.
