Land, Brenda ; Fleming, Joe . 2008. Magnesium Chloride Toilet Vault Treatment: A Means To Inhibit Freezing in Outdoor Toilet Vaults. 0823 1301P. San Dimas, CA: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, National Technology and Development Program.

This 4-page tech tip discusses the effectiveness of using magnesium chloride to prevent toilet vault contents from freezing. SDTDC was asked to address the issue of frozen waste. The project's goal was to develop a system or technique that will prevent (or inhibit) stalagmite formation in the vaults. If the contents can be kept in a fluid condition, the waste will spread evenly throughout the vault and not form a frozen cone. Magnesium chloride proved to be an effective and cost-effective solution compared to steam cleaning and pumping.
