Planning and Designing Outdoor Recreation Facilities for Horses
By Sunni Bradshaw
Horse use has a long tradition on national forests, particularly forests with lots of backcountry. Today, more and more riders enjoy facilities closer to cities and towns. Information about planning, designing, and managing these facilities has not been readily available. The comprehensive "Equestrian Design Guidebook for Trails, Trailheads, and Campgrounds" can help land managers, landscape architects, and others create successful outdoor recreation programs and facilities for horses and their riders. The emphasis is on highly developed facilities and programs such as those found in urban, rural, and some wildland areas. The Federal Highway Administration funded production of this guidebook and can be viewed at: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/fspubs/08232332/
