Beckley, Bob . 2010. Sustainability Solutions No. 4: Leased Fire Center Built With Sustainability in Mind. 1073 2T05. Missoula, MT: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, National Technology and Development Program.

The Tucson Interagency Fire Center has a new leased building that was designed to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver certification. An array of solar panels not only can generate 2 kilowatts of electricity, it provides shaded parking for 12 vehicles. Gabions (wire baskets filled with native rocks) were placed in front of the building for a low-cost crash barrier. Other sustainable features include energy-efficient lighting, high-performance glass, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and white roof surfaces to reflect heat.

Keywords: gabions, LEED silver, photovoltaic systems, solar panels, Tucson Interagency Fire Center, xeriscaping
