Davies, Mary Ann; Outka-Perkins, Lisa . 2012. Monitoring Water Quality: Collecting Stream Samples/Collecting Lake Samples. 1225 2D02. Missoula, MT: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, National Technology and Development Program.

The Forest Service is responsible for protecting watersheds in the National Forest System from the adverse effects of changing air quality and land uses. This requires a rigorous set of protocols to provide clean, high-quality water samples for lab analysis and data interpretation. This closed-captioned training describes the proper procedures for collecting samples and measurements from streams and lakes. The DVD presents two separate programs. The stream sampling program has six parts: How to Prepare for Your Trip, How to Locate Sample Sites, How to Document Sites, How to Collect Water Samples, Taking Measurements at the Collection Site, and Sample Handling and Shipping. The lake sampling program has seven parts: Types of Lake Sampling, Planning for a Sampling Trip, Packing the Equipment for a Sampling Trip, Shoreline Sampling, Mid-Lake Sampling, Documenting the Samples and Site, and Handling and Shipping Samples.
