Landscape Simulations

Software Evaluations

Genesis is an inexpensive landscape simulation program that allows the user to create fairly realistic looking landscapes. Genesis uses GIS polygon data to place vegetation. This program uses a fractal rendering system, which allows for very excellent surface and texture manipulation.

Ease of Use
Very easy to learn and use.

Ease of viewpoint placement
Viewpoints can be placed using specific coordinates. This is almost identical to Envision.

Terrain accuracy
The terrain in images that were produced is not as accurate as expected. This may have to do with how the DEM’s are imported.

Vegetation accuracy
L-system images represent the vegetation, which have the potential for good images, but are difficult to model to an exact species. On a landscape image, they look great, but the realism breaks down at close range.

Ease of vegetation manipulation
Genesis will place vegetation into specified GIS polygons. This is accomplished by creating stand parameters, and then attaching those parameters to specified stands. One way of doing this is by creating a vegetation layer for each habitat type.

Photo-realism
The photo-realism is pretty good. There are problems with how the terrain is rendered.

Walk-through/Fly-through capable
Genesis does provide the capability to create fly-through movies for viewing.

Training availability
There is very little support for the program.
