Listening. Listening is one of the best ways to calm someone down. Ask visitors to explain why they are upset. In many cases, the more they explain their concern the calmer they become. This gives them a chance to be heard, which is usually all they really want.
While visitors are explaining why they are angry, be attentive and ask clarifying questions. Paraphrase the problem back to them so they know they have been heard clearly and correctly.
