Safety and Health

Horse Sense

Image of the Defensive Horse Safety introduction page.Nowhere is safety more important than when working around pack and saddlestock. The training course "Defensive Horse Safety" (0767–2W02–MTDC) presents valuable information on remaining safe while performing such tasks as catching, leading, tying, grooming, bridling, and saddling stock. Short video clips augment the text and add insight into proper safety practices.

Simply viewing this training course is not enough to certify the user to work safely around pack and saddlestock. This course is designed to supplement an 8-hour training program that includes hands-on instruction. Novice users, in particular, must receive instruction from a certified instructor.

All of the training materials can be accessed at http://www.fs.fed.us/t-d/pubs/flash/fla07672F02/index.htm (Username: t-d, Password: t-d)

For additional information about horse safety, contact Andrew McLean, project leader (phone: 406–829–6805; e-mail: amclean@fs.fed.us).

A CD can be prepared if someone has trouble downloading the training course. Contact MTDC publications (phone: 406–329–3978; e-mail: wo_mtdc_pubs@fs.fed.us) for a CD.
