Figure 30 Long Description

Graphic showing the correct placement of a road closure sign.

This image portrays a two-lane highway, with traffic proceeding in opposite directions on each lane of the road. At approximately the center of the highway in the right-hand lane is a white car identified as a Stopped Vehicle. Further ahead and off the right side of the road is a green truck identified as a Guard Vehicle.

Several signs are placed on the bottom right corner of the image:

  1. A diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and black text that reads Road Closed Ahead. An optional warning light is depicted at the top of the triangle as a small orange circle on top of a small white box.

  2. A diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and black text that reads Be Prepared To Stop. An optional warning light is depicted at the top of the triangle as a small orange circle on top of a small white box. Directly underneath the diamond-shaped sign is a rectangular orange sign with a black border and black text that reads XX MPH, indicating that a specific recommended speed, in miles per hour, would be printed on the sign. Text indicates that this advisory speed plaque is optional.

  3. Beyond these signs is a red flag image positioned at a 90-degree angle on the right shoulder of the highway directly to the side of the stopped vehicle, indicating where the flagger would be standing. Some unidentified amount of buffer space would remain between the flagger and the road closure barricade positioned further ahead on the road.

  4. Just beyond the location of the flagger is an octagon-shaped red sign with a narrow white border and white text that reads Stop. Directly beneath the stop sign is a rectangular white sign with a black border and black text that reads Traffic Control Point. The green guard vehicle is positioned further up the road off to the right side of the highway.

  5. Just beyond the stop sign sits a Type III barricade:

    1. This sign consists of three white boards with diagonal orange stripes that are mounted on two posts, with space between each board, to form a movable road barricade. Hanging on the center board is a white rectangular sign with a black border and black text that reads Road Closed. A vertical heading on the left side of the graphic reads Safe passing side. Just below that heading is vertical text that indicates the height of the mounted sign from the ground to the top of the first striped board is a minimum of 5 feet. The horizontal heading at the bottom of the graphic reads Type III barricade.

    2. Along the bottom tier spanning the entire width of the sign is text indicating that the sign is a minimum of 4 feet in width. Along the right side of the diagram is the text 8 to 12 inches, indicating the thickness of each striped board mounted on the sign posts.

    3. On the top right of the sign is a red arrow with the text that reads Safe passing side. The arrow points to the top diagonal orange striped board, and is angled from the upper right corner of the graphic to the top of the first striped board. To the left of the red arrow is the text 45 degrees, indicating that the orange stripes on the board are angled at 45 degrees.

    4. On the top left of the diagram is the text Warning light optional. Under this text and to the left is an image of a warning light, in the shape of a small yellow circle sitting on top of a small white rectangular box.

A series of signs is placed upside down at the top left corner of this image to indicate they would be placed in view of the oncoming traffic in the opposite lane of the highway:

  1. A diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and black text that reads One Lane Road Ahead. An optional warning light is depicted at the top of the triangle as a small orange circle on top of a small white box.

  2. Directly underneath the diamond-shaped sign is a rectangular orange sign with a black border and black text that reads XX MPH, indicating that a specific recommended speed, in miles per hour, would be printed on the sign. Text indicates that this advisory speed plaque is optional.
