Pocket Safety Guide for Dams
and Impoundments
Figure 1 Long Description
Drawing of a typical dam with common terms labeled throughout image. The following terms are labeled:
- Reservoir-Shows the main body of water on the upstream side of the dam.
- Upstream slope (face)-An arrow shows the whole side of the dam that meets the reservoir.
- Principal spillway (drop inlet riser)-An arrow points out a square man-made feature mostly submerged in water with a dotted line showing the outflow pipe coming from it.
- Emergency spillway (auxillary)-An arrow points to this extra spillway for when water fills the reservoir too fast for the principal spillway to keep up.
- Crest-An arrow shows the top of the dam between the downstream and upstream slopes.
- Downstream slope (face)-An arrow shows the downstream side of the dam that is opposite the reservoir.
- Toe drain-An arrow points out the toe drain that collects seepage and runs along the crease where the hill and dam meet.
- Abutment contact (groin)-An arrow shows the part of the valley side where the dam was constructed against.
- Toe drain outfall-An arrow shows the discharge point for the toe drain.
- Outlet works-An arrow shows were the water from the water spills out through the dam from the outlet pipe.
