2016 Forest Service Engineers of the Year

Greg McNamee—2016 Engineering Technology Applications Person of the Year

image of Greg McNameeGreg McNamee began his Forest Service career in 2007 as a cartographic tech at the Intermountain Region Regional Office in Ogden, UT. He became a visual information specialist for the region in 2008, creating map layouts, illustrations, and various publications. The following year, he became a geographic information system (GIS) and visual information specialist. This position is a blend of cartography, GIS analysis, programming, and design work, and provides the basic framework for work to come. In 2016, he became the web and mobile GIS specialist for the Intermountain Region. In this capacity, he provides guidance for the ArcGIS platform, acts as an administrator and advisor for ArcGIS Online, and manages mobile data collection efforts across the region.

McNamee received a bachelor’s degree in design in 2001 from Miami University in Oxford, OH, and an applied GIS certifcation from the University of Utah in 2008.

One of McNamee’s recent accomplishments is the development of the Intermountain Region ArcGIS Online Content Creation Guidance document. The procedures outlined in this document allow users to create a variety of web content while adhering to national and regional guidelines. Top CIO ArcGIS Online administrators have recognized this document and it is being promoted as a national template.

McNamee was selected to participate in the prototype development of the Talking Points Collaborative Mapping tool on the ArcGIS platform. This prototype is a joint effort between Esri, the Forest Service Ecosystem Management Coordination (EMC) Human Dimensions Program, and the Southwestern and Intermountain Regions. He quickly moved from the role of a participant to lead developer and programmer. This group produced a web GIS application to take public comment for Forest Plan Revision, which employees are currently using across the country. His contribution to this effort has been a key achievement.

McNamee represents the Intermountain Region on the National ArcGIS Online Administrator Team, the Mobile Geospatial Technical Advisory Group, and the Forest Service Enterprise Web GIS Team. These teams will help shape the future of mobile and web GIS technologies within the agency.

McNamee resides in Salt Lake City, UT, with his wife, Joey. He spends most of his free time fly fishing and chasing his two children, Cora and Franklin.
