DescriptionChunkwood was found to be composed of a few large particles and many small particles with the large particles constituting almost half the total weight. More than 75 percent of the chunk weight was composed of particles weighing more than 100 grams (ovendry), while 85 percent of the chip weight was composed of particles weighing 3 grams or less. Energy densities ranged from 89,675 Btu/cu. ft for green aspen chips to 162,520 Btu/cu. ft for dried sugar maple chunks. Chunks and chips were air-dried from July through October in eight covered cribs. For both species tested, the chunks dried faster than the chips to about 20 percent maoisture content
