DescriptionInitial stem diameter of bareroot red oak planting stock was a better morphological indicator of future height and diameter growth in a shelterwood underplanting than were initial shoot length and number of first-order lateral roots. Stem diameter near the root collar provides an integrated measure of the growth potential of red oak planting stock because of its strong relationship with shoot and root characteristics associated with field performance. Ease of measuremeht and the significant, positive correlation of stem diameter with root system size, also make diameter an operationally attractive morphological feature for use as a nursery grading criteria.
