DescriptionFifty-five tree and shrub species were evaluated on two surface-mine sites in eastern Kentucky. After 4 years' growth, comparison of survival and growth was used to identify the promising species for planting on acid surface-mine spoils. Three species of birch and three Eleagnus species survived and grew well on a range of sites. Noncommercial tree species and shrubs adapted to acid surface-mine spoils included silktree, tree-of-heaven, French tamarisk, Japanese fleeceflower, and Amur privet.
