    Description

This study investigated the relationship of motivation for and perceived constraints to physical activity (PA) participation and the well-being of senior center participants. A survey instrument made up of modified versions of the Sport Motivation and Perceived Constraints Scales, the Life Satisfaction Index-Z, and the Geriatric Depression Scale was administered at the Cascades, VA, Senior Center. Findings indicate that all perceived constraints (intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural) were inversely correlated to frequency of physical activity participation. Further, interpersonal and intrapersonal constraints were positively correlated to lack of motivation. Structural constraints were indirectly and inversely related to life satisfaction moderated by frequency of physical activity participation. These results indicate that perceived constraints play a key role in defining PA and well-being.
