DescriptionThis study is part II of an investigation pertaining to the peripheral-milling process of planing lumber. Some relationships were determined between cutterhead horsepower and various combinations of specimen, cutterhead, and feed factors. Power demand curves were interpreted through comparison with simultaneously taken one micro-second photos of the forming chips. Secondary consideration was given to the quality of surface obtained. The cutterhead variables, feeds, and speeds employed are in the range of those commonly used in industry, i.e., feed speeds to 500 FPM with cutterheads ranging up to 9-inch cutting-circle diameter and carrying up to 8 knives.
