DescriptionHabitat used by 20 adult radio-collared American martens was investigated in northeastern Oregon between 1993 and 1997 to provide land managers with information on habitat management for this species. Martens showed a strong preference for old structure, unlogged stands in subalpine fir and spruce forests with canopy closures 2508, a high density of dead trees and logs, and in close proximity to water. Martens avoided harvested stands, dry forest types, early structural classes, and areas with low densities of dead trees. Factors such as disturbance patterns, tree diseases, forest structure, prey base, and predators are important considerations in a management plan for martens.
