    Bdella longicornis L. was studied to assess its role in winter morality of Tetranychus pacificus McGregor in northern California vineyards. Data indicate this predator was present in vineyards during winter and is most common on mature vine trunks near ground level; it was absent from July to September. We discuss consumption rates in the laboratory; a defense dance; tethering behavior during prey capture; preoviposition and meeting behaviors; and ova development time. The predator has potential for limiting the number of tetranychids that survive subcortical diapause on vines during winter. When augmented with phytoseiids, bdellids could help minimize tetranychid numbers on vine foliage in early spring, resulting in a lowered tetranychid: phytoseiid ratio and subsequently favoring early season tetranychid control by phytoseiids.
