DescriptionThe Rio Grande cutthroat trout was once widespread in the upper Rio Grande and Canadian River basins of northern New Mexico and south-central Colorado and in the headwaters of the Pecos River, New Mexico (Sublette et al. 1990; Behnke 1992). It may have occurred as far south as Chihuahua, Mexico (Behnke 1992). Currently, it is restricted primarily to headwater tributaries within its native range. Its southernmost distribution is Indian Creek in the Lincoln National Forest and Animas Creek in the Gila National Forest, southern New Mexico. It ranges north to headwater tributaries of the Rio Grande in the Rio Grande and San Juan National Forests in southwestern Colorado. There are few lake and introduced populations (Colorado Division of Wildlife 1992; Stumpff 1992).
