    Population abundance and related parameters need to be assessed to implement effective wildlife management. These essential parameters are often very hard to obtain for rare, wide-ranging and elusive species, particularly those listed as endangered or threatened (IUCN 2001). In Italy, wolves Canis lupus Linnaeus 1758, now a fully protected species in Western Europe, recently recolonized the Western Alps after 70 years through dispersal fromtheApennines (Fabbri et al. 2007). This wolf population is expanding (Boitani 2003), although accurate estimates of trends of population size and survival are lacking.
