DescriptionA model WB-55 Biobaler was evaluated while operating in a pine plantation to remove understory biomass. The harvested material was formed into round bales which averaged 1004 lbs. Mean heat content was approximately 8560 Btu/lb oven-dry. Time-study data revealed a productivity of 14.7 bales/PMH with a mean travel distance of 752 feet between bales. In-woods cost was between $17 to $18/gt (green ton). Size classification of unprocessed baled material and material processed thru a chipper and a haybuster resulted in an increase in the 4.75 mm size class from 29 percent of total weight to over 45 percent for both the chipper and haybuster. The intended purpose for baling understory biomass is to utilize the material as an alternative fuel source.
