DescriptionNorway spruce cuttings of 40 clones were tested on seven contrasting sites in northern Germany. Analysis of variance for ten-year height growth indicate a highly significant clone x site interaction. This interaction may be reduced by selection of stable clones. Several measures of stability were calculated and discussed. Characterization of sites by the method of genetic correlation indicate that most of the interaction is being generated between sites of high and low elevation. Stratification of the area into two planting zones based on elevation would also reduce the interaction. Whatever method is used, the cost involved must be compared with the increase in genetic gain.
