DescriptionThe occurrence of permafrost in stream valleys of central Alaska causes problems with conventional stream-gauging installations. To minimize both thermal and physical disturbance at measurement sites, pre-fabricated Parshall flumes have been used to monitor streamflow at sites underlain with permafrost in a subarctic research watershed. Flumes ranging in capacity from 263 to 700 liters per second (l/s) were installed and have performed satisfactorily for two open-water runoff seasons.
