DescriptionThe California Department of Conservation, Division of Mines and Geology (DMG) is submitting this report and accompanying maps to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) to fulfill Interagency Agreement number 8CA38400, Pilot Monitoring Program -- Geologic Input for the Hillslope Component. Under this agreement, DMG has assisted CDF in the development of hillslope monitoring techniques needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Forest Practice Rules in protecting water quality. The major component of DMG’s work involved defining the physical characteristics of the pilot watersheds, including the North Fork of the Gualala River in Mendocino County (McKittrick, 1995A), the portion of the North Fork of the Mokelumne River that is in Amador County (McKittrick, 1995B), and the North and South Forks of Caspar Creek above their weir dams in Mendocino County (Spittler and McKittrick, 1995). Concurrently, DMG also participated in the Monitoring Study Group (MSG) to aid in developing analysis techniques for evaluating for hillslope processes and to develop procedures for selecting and evaluating monitoring locations for a possible long-term monitoring program
