Over 3 million acres of land located in 22 National Recreation Areas managed by the Forest Service is preserved for recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing and swimming, while highlighting natural, cultural and scenic resources. Visitors who choose to recreate on these public lands find 164,000 miles of trails, over 30,000 recreation sites, over 5,000 miles of streams and 3 million acres of lakes, 127 alpine ski areas, 338,000 heritage sites, and specially designated sites that include 37 million acres of designated wilderness areas, 130 wild and scenic rivers, 15 monuments, and one preserve. Aerie Crag Picnic Area and Campground

Lakeside picnic area along the Rush Creek on June Lake Loop. When local campgrounds are full this site may be opened as overflow camping for self-contained RV's. 10 sites total, great for emergencies or while waiting for something to come open.

Bald Mountain Road

23 miles round trip loop Leaves Hwy. 395 from the top of Deadman Summit at Logging Camp road and goes to the Bald Mountain fire lookout station. Stay on 1S05 and follow the signs to Bald Mountain lookout.  There are great views and the road is well-maintained.  A log cabin warming hut at the top is open to the public.

Big Bend Campground

Elevation 7800 feet. 17 campsites on Lee Vining Creek. Near the Tuolumne Meadows entrance of Yosemite National Park. Campsites can accommodate a 30-foot vehicle. Drinking water and vault toilets are available. 14 day stay limit. Each campsite has a bear locker for food storage. This is Bear Country; please store food properly and don't feed the bears.

Big Meadow Campground

This small 11 unit campground is sited along Rock Creek affording wonderful scenery, fishing and a peaceful setting.

Big Pine Area

Camping, fishing, hiking and backpacking draw many visitors to the Big Pine Creek Area every year.  Beautiful First Falls is a short walk from the picnic area. Longer hikes up the north fork trail leads to glacier fed lakes, First through Seventh lakes and great views into the Palisade Glacier Basin.  Overnight stays in the John Muir Wilderness require a wilderness permit.

Big Pine Canyon Group- Clyde & Palisade Glacier

Clyde Glacier group campsite can accommodate up to 1-20 people. Palisade Glacier group campsite is tent only and can accommodate 20 people. These group sites are close to Upper Sage Flat family campground so loud events are not appropriate. 

Big Pine Creek Campground

This traditional family campground adjacent to Big Pine Creek has 30 campsites, most with shade, all within close distance to fishing opportunities.  Bear proof food storage containers available in the campground.

Big Springs Campground

Located between Mammoth Lakes and June Lake, near the Crestview area, this campground has 26 campsites surrounded by pine forest. This is a popular basecamp for fishing Deadman Creek, exploring Obsidian Dome and OHV/ATV trails in the Lookout Mountain area. Bring your own water. Sites are self register when you arrive, no reservations. 14 day stay limit.

Big Trees Campground

Named for the very large Jeffery pines that grace the site, Big Trees Campground is located along the banks of Bishop Creek and affords nice camping and fishing opportunities. Some sites in shade and some in open sunlight. Bear proof food storage containers available in the campground. 16 campsites. 

Bishop Park Campground

Bishop Park is one of the most popular campgrounds in the Bishop Creek Area.  Located on the banks of the Middle Fork of Bishop Creek, Bishop Park has grassy lawns and campsites right on the creek. Many of the 21 campsites are walk in tent sites. Not recommended for large RVs, there are a few sites that will accommodate smaller rigs. 

Bishop Park Group Campground

Located along Bishop Creek located between the turn-off to South Lake and the community of Aspendell, this group camp is by reservation only. Facilities include flush toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings. Popular activities include horseback riding, wildlife viewing, hiking, and fishing in a stocked trout stream. Buttermilk Country

Cedar Flat Group Camps

Located near Westgard Pass and White Mountain Road, three separate large group sites are popular with academic institutions for geology field trips. Surrounded by Pinyon and Juniper, Camp Nelson, Camp Noren, and Camp Ferguson all have shade ramada’s, campfire ring, picnic table, and vault toilets. These sites are dry, the nearest water source is Big Pine.

Coldwater Campground

Mammoth Lakes Basin is located through town, just 5 to 10 minutes drive. 77 campsites. The campground is located along Coldwater Creek.

Convict Boat Ramp

The marina includes rental boats and boat dock. Paved boat ramp and trailer parking are near the bait shop. Boats longer than 25 feet would have difficulty navigating between the ramp and breakwater. Convict Lake is a no wake lake.    The end of south shore road has beach access to launch canoes, kayaks or paddleboards.
