Success Stories - Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail

Photo: Four cyclists on a two-track gravel trail in fall. The Bureau of Land Management's Eagle Lake Field Office and the Lassen National Forest, both based in Susanville, California, are offering the public high quality recreation experiences on the jointly managed Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail. Stretching nearly 30 miles between the northeast California communities of Susanville and Westwood, the trail provides excellent family mountain biking outings, scenic hiking, fishing, picnicking and wildlife watching opportunities. While the eastern section of this rail trail conversion is managed by the BLM and the west end by the Forest Service, visitors recognize the trail simple as "The Bizz." An annual marathon attracts hundreds of runners from across the nation, periodic organized shuttle outings bring visitors from surrounding northern California and Nevada communities, and close community proximity provides convenient daily recreation and exercise opportunities for locals. For organized events requiring special recreation use permits, the local BLM and Forest Service offices coordinate closely to streamline the permitting process.
