Wilderness is where natural processes are the primary influences and human activity is limited to primitive recreation and minimal tools.  8 Wilderness areas are managed by White River National Forest. Regulations are in place to protect these areas; it is your responsibility to know and adhere to these rules.

Scenic Areas

Maroon Bells

Maroon Bells Scenic Area, near Aspen, CO is one of the most iconic areas in Colorado. The area is a great place to visit for the day, venture out on a day hike and enjoy a picnic. Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness surounds this unique area. Know before you go.

Scenic Byways

Wildflowers along Flat Tops Scenic Byway

The 82-mile Flat Tops Trail Scenic Byway connects the towns of Meeker and Yampa. Approximately 40 miles of the byway are unpaved, but accessible by regular touring cars. *Road is snow-covered in winter but open to snowmobile and cross-country ski use.

West Elk Scenic Byway is anchored by Mount Sopris in Carbondale and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Notable landscapes are abundant on this 205 mile scenic drive rich with historic & cultural highlights. 

Trappers Lake

Trappers Lake near Flat tops Wilderness.

Trappers Lake is known as the Cradle of Wilderness due to Arthur Carhart's time there in 1919 when he advised the area stay undeveloped. The lake is surrounded by Flat Tops Wilderness. Camping and cabin rentals are available at the lake.

Hanging Lake

Hanging Lake Trail is a steep, 1.2 mile scenic trail that experiences 100,000 visitors a year! The 1000 foot climb up this trail travels from the bottom of Glenwood Canyon up through Deadhorse Creek Canyon to Hanging Lake. *This area has special restriction due to a fragile ecosystem.

Vail Pass Winter Recreation Area

Vail Pass Winter Recreation Area covers 55,000 acres and offers 119 miles of motorized and non-motorized trails. There are some groomed routes in this area.

Historic Sites

Crystal MillThe Historic Crystal Mill near Marble is one of the most picturesque and photographed mining sites in Colorado.
