Angeles National Forest Fire Management Program
Forest Fuels Reduction Program
The arid climate, highly flammable vegetation, steep slopes, and seasonal winds in Southern California make it a fire-prone area. Dense fuels and wildland-urban interface (WUI) have made it more difficult to fight fires adjacent to communities. Year round the Angeles National Forest - San Gabriel Mountains National Monument works to reduce the risks that wildfires pose to communities, firefighters, and resources through Forest prevention, preparedness, and fuels reduction programs.
Fire Management in conjunction with other Forest specialists completed hazardous fuels treatments in selected areas of the Forest each year. The goals of the vegetation or "fuels" management projects are twofold—to protect communities from the threat of wildfires and to improve forest health conditions.
Become a Wildland Firefighter
The Angeles National Forest participates in the agency-wide hiring process to hire seasonal and permanent wildland firefighters.
Be Prepared for a Wildfire
Dense brush and shrubs surround many homes in California. The public is an important partner in the fight to minimize the potential for devastating fires. You can help by reviewing this information [Fire Wise: www.firewise.org] to find out if you, your family and your property are prepared. Not a Forest Service web site.
