Cabin Rentals: Shaw House

Shaw House, Arizona

This historic 3-bedroom rock house is located in east Cochise Stronghold, within the homeland of the famed Chiricahua Apache chief. Set in the spectacularly scenic Dragoon Mountains, guests enjoy views of Rockfellow Dome, and the house is close to excellent hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding opportunities.

History

The Dragoon Mountains and surrounding region lie within the homeland of the Chiricahua Apaches, and most of what is now Cochise County was once part of the Chiricahua Apache Reservation, established in 1872. The reservation was abolished in 1876, however, and the Apaches were forced to leave. Non-Apaches then moved into the area and filed homestead claims. The Dragoons were designated the Dragoon National Forest in 1907, and became part of the Coronado National Forest in 1908. There are still several parcels of private land within the stronghold, and visitors to Shaw House are requested to respect the neighbors’ desire for quiet as well as their property rights.

The core of Shaw House is a small adobe dwelling built in the 1890s. Subsequent owners added rooms and changed the appearance of the house. The Shaw family occupied the house from 1920 until the 1960s and brought it to its current configuration. Coronado National Forest acquired the property in 1969 and used it to house employees until 2005. Now, as part of the “Rooms with a View” program, it provides a unique recreation opportunity for visitors to the Coronado National Forest.
