Learn what you can do about drought-stressed trees and bark beetles

This beetle is native to western North American forests and attacks pine trees.

Four years of drought have put tremendous stress on trees in California’s forests, resulting in widespread mortality. Bark beetles are the primary cause of mortality for most pine and fir trees but other trees such as incense cedar and live oak are simply dying from lack of water.

In June 2021 multiple boulders blocking a section of the PCT in the San Jacinto Ranger District were removed using explosives. The successful clearing of the trail was made possible by the collaborative efforts of members of the Forest Service, Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA), American Conservation Experience (ACE), and the Backcountry Horseman of California.
