New airtanker base will serve 600-mile radius, protecting multiple states

A new airtanker base, ramp area and seven reload pits are taking shape in Colorado Springs. The base will operate six reload pits for large airtankers and one reload pit dedicated to very large airtankers. Fifteen states, in four Forest Service regions, will be within the 600-mile service area. Read more about this new facility.

USDA Forest Service and Western Area Power Administration working together to reduce wildfire threat and prevent outages

The Forest Service has issued new transmission line permits to the United States Department of Energy’s Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) to reduce the threat of wildfire ignitions from transmission lines while minimizing the potential for power outages. Learn More.

The USDA Forest Service’s Rocky Mountain Region is hosting a Fall Fire Hire event to fill approximately 100 wildland fire jobs including Engine, Hotshot, Helitack, Handcrew and Fuels positions. The hiring process will be expedited using Direct Hire Authority with vacancies filled in the fall of 2021.
