Forest Product Permits

The following actions are prohibited: Cutting, removing or otherwise damaging any timber, tree, or other forest product, including special forest products and forest botanical products

Forest Products are forest resources that are used for personal, commercial, and scientific purposes.  Examples include (Christmas trees, firewood, small tree, and other live plants, collections of cones, bark, conks, boughs, mushrooms, post and poles, rocks, etc.) except as authorized by Federal law, regulation, permit, contract, special use authorization, free use authorizatin, or personal use authorization. 

Guidelines for Plant Collection:

  • Following appropriate environmental analysis, commercial collection of native species (plants, plant parts, or seed-quantity, location and appropriateness) may be allowed.
  • Except for Forest Service approved scientific or restoration projects, or cultural use, no collection of seeds or plants are permitted in Research Natural Areas, Special Interest Areas, Wilderness or recommended Wilderness, developed recreation sites, the Central Wasatch Management Areas, and within the Cache Box-Elder Management Area from mouth of Logan Canyon to Temple Fork and Tony Grove-White Pine areas.

Evanston/Mt. View Ranger Districticts: Permits on sale November 16th 2018 Christmas Tree Permits are $10, one per household, 18 years and older. A permit is good for one tree, up to 20 feet tall.

Ashley National Forest Christmas Tree Permits: Holiday tree permits will go on sale November 15th at Forest Service offices, in Manila, Vernal, Roosevelt and Duchesne along with local vendors.  Tree permits are $15.00, limit one tree per household.

Fishlake National Forest: Christmas tree permits sell for $10.00 each and they must be obtained in person. Mail orders and phone requests will not be accepted. The permits must be securely attached to the harvested tree and remain with that tree during transport. Most species of trees on the National Forest may be cut, except for ponderosa pine. Permits may be bought at any of the Fishlake National Forest offices. These offices are not open on weekends, except as noted. News Release

Firewood cutting permits allows firewood cutters to remove downed timber or to cut standing dead trees under most conditions. Firewood cutters are urged to use caution when driving and cutting in the forest, as both are potentially dangerous activities. 

The funds generated by firewood permit sales go directly into road maintenance and salvage sale fund.

The Ogden and Logan Ranger Districts are now selling firewood cutting permits for $7.50 per cord.    Permits will be issued for a minimum of 4 cords for $30.00 and a maximum of 10 cords for $75.00.  Permits are valid for dead and down wood, in designated areas.  A permit may be purchased at either the Logan or Ogden district office that will allow cutting on both districts.  Contact either office for specific dates, maps and accessibility at 435-755-3620 for Logan and 801-625-5112 for Ogden.  Permits are available at the Logan Ranger District, 1500 E Highway 89 Logan Utah or Ogden Ranger District 507 25th St. Ogden Utah.

Heber/Kamas Ranger District at (435) 783-4338 or
(435) 654-0470 Starting Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 10:00 am you can cut firewood in the following campgrounds: Mirror Lake, Lost Creek, Moosehorn, Trial Lake, Washington Lake, and Lilly lake. Please note that restrooms will not be available.  No camping will be permitted in these areas.  No felling of trees will be permitted within the campgrounds, and activities should be limited to cutting and gathering of firewood from trees that are already on the ground.
