TRM - Mobile Seed Zone Mapping

Knowledge of the seed zone where native plant material is collected is critical information that needs to be passed on to restoration specialists using these materials. Field personnel need a reliable way of determining the seed zone at their current location and at adjacent collection sites, in both connnected (WiFi, Mobile phone carrier network) and disconnected environments.

To meet this need we have developed several mobile applications that function on both Android iOS (Apple),and PC devices. Think about your field collection or monitoring mission and choose the solution that best fits your situation:

1). I have a mobile data device (Android or iOS) and will be in an area where there is no mobile data service (disconnected environment):

a.) I would like to collect some data (e.g. collector name, spp, date, amount collected, photo):

The ArcGIS Collector Seed Zone Maps use the US Forest Service ArcGIS On-Line organization account to capture and store collection data as well as providing seed zone location information. This solution is available to US Forest Service employees; if you are a contractor or work for a cooperating agency, see your Forest Service point of contact to see if you can get an ArcGIS On-Line account. Information on obtaining a USFS ArcGIS On-Line account is here (FS Intraweb site). To get started using this solution click here. BE SURE TO SET UP COLLECTOR IN AN CONNECTED ENVIRONMENT BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE FIELD. Section 2 in the document covers use in disconnected environments. (Android or iOS).

b.)  I just need to know where I am and what seed zone I am in. Not interested in collecting any data:

The Statewide PSZ Android Apps are compatible with phones and tablets running the Android operating system. If you anticipate working in more than one state, you may install more than one statewide app. The apps contain seed zone and basic map data so they can function in a disconnected environment. When a mobile network is detected and the device connects, the app will switch to an on-line operating mode which enables a more detailed streets background map and imagery. If you anticipate being in and out of connected environments, this is the best choice. (Android only).

Google Maps is a familiar browser-based map environment; this solution has embedded seed zone data in Google Maps. This document has links to on-line Google Maps that contain various seed zones by geographic area (FS Region, State). Send the desired links via email to your mobile device and query seed zones. (Android, iOS, PC).

The Provisional Seed Zone Mobile WebMap opens in a web browser on your device and zooms to your location. Email or txt the html link above to your device. The icon in the upper right allows you to switch between street map and imagery. This solution is CONUS-wide. (Android, iOS, PC).
