Springerville, AZ; May 29, 2015—The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests (ASNFs) has opened the majority of their campgrounds from the Mogollon Rim to Clifton. The store and marina at the Big Lake Recreation Area are now fully open and include: all toilets and the fish cleaning station. The Woods Canyon Lake Store is also open for the season.
Important: The Black Mesa Ranger District is preparing areas for thinning treatments that are north and south of Woods Canyon Lake and east and west of Bear Canyon Lake. It is important you know of these projects, and it will not impact the availability of campsites in our developed areas (i.e. fee sites) or access to the Woods Canyon Lake store.
- Around Bear Canyon Lake, some dispersed campsites may be closed while projects are active in the area but access to the lake will be maintained from either the east via Forest Road 84A or the West via Forest Road 89A.
The treatment areas will be divided into segments that are designated as a timber sale or task order and treated in sequence or at once. The first area that will be impacted will be east of Bear Canyon Lake. The offering is being advertised in the paper this week, so cutting could occur as soon as June. Once the project is formally advertised (for this project and all others), a map of the treatment area will be posted on our forest land management website.
- Hazards in the areas of the forest that were consumed by fire on both the Apache and the Sitgreaves Forests still exist and we ask you to make sure you watch for stump holes and look up and all around when hiking.
- A reminder to campers and hikers bears have been sighted and removed from campgrounds already this spring. Please go to the ASNFs website and play the video on ‘Be Bear Aware’.

Currently, there are no fire restrictions on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests and conditions are being reviewed weekly by local, state and federal agencies on when restrictions should be implemented. Make sure you bring a shovel and plenty of water to extinguish your fire.
Camping outside of reserved campsites is called ‘Dispersed’ camping and is allowed and there are no services available.
Follow the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests on Twitter (@A_SNFs) for instant updates on forest information, recreational opportunities, and fire restrictions.
